CATRANS LODD: Veteran Caltrans employee killed over the weekend by drunk driver

A CalTrans employee was struck and killed by a suspected drunk driver on Highway 99 near Chico over the weekend, according to the CHP.

www.ResponderSafety.com is reporting another non fire LODD. This is related because, as shown above, it can be any fire/EMS/police officer personnel operating on the roadways.

A veteran Caltrans employee was killed over the weekend after a drunk driver struck and killed him near the scene of another fatal accident in Chico, California. Gary Smith, 57, helped set up a traffic block for the CHP on the northbound lanes of Highway 99 after a fatal DUI crash.

Russell Hodge, 45, drove his Ford F250 truck through the closure and slammed into Smith, fatally injuring him. The drunk Hodge continued driving down Highway 99, but was stopped by a CHP officer a short distance down the road.

CHP determined Hodge was under the influence and arrested him-and it should be noted that Hodge has been convicted three times of driving under the influence in the past 10 years. Hodge is facing charges of second-degree murder.

****REMINDER**** Every fire has the ability to be catastrophic. The wildland fire management environment has profoundly changed. Growing numbers of communities, across the nation, are experiencing longer fire seasons; more frequent, bigger, and more severe, fires are a real threat. Be careful with all campfires and equipment.

"I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts, and beer." --Abraham Lincoln
