Two bodies were found this morning inside a burning van on the side of Highway 152 about one mile west of Santa Clara County-Merced County line, according to the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office.
About 3:30 a.m., the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection responded to a report of a vehicle on fire on eastbound Highway 152. When Cal Fire arrived, firefighters found the van was still burning, sheriff’s Sgt. Rick Sung said. After “stabilizing the scene,” fire crews realized there were two bodies inside the van.
Investigators from the sheriff’s office were called to the scene about 4 a.m., according to Sgt. Rick Sung.
There were no signs that the van had been involved in a collision, Sung said.
At this point, investigators are treating the deaths as “suspicious,” Sung said.
