Fire Chief Investigated Over Puppy Beating
LOS ANGELES ― Authorities say they are investigating the self-defense claim of a Los Angeles County assistant fire chief in the beating of a neighbor's puppy that had to be euthanized.

Los Angeles County Fire Chief P. Michael Freeman says Glynn Johnson has been placed on paid administrative leave Friday while the Riverside County Sheriff's Department investigates Monday's incident.

Shelly Toole, the owner of Karley, a 6-month-old shepherd mix, says Johnson beat the dog in a violent rage.
Investigators say Johnson told them he acted in self-defense.

A Riverside teenager who left home to run an errand came home 20 minutes later to find paramedics, police and a firetruck outside his home. A neighbor took him to see the family dog, beaten and bleeding under a bush.

The female dog, a 6-month-old shepherd mix named Karley, allegedly was beaten by a neighbor, Los Angeles County Assistant Fire Chief Glynn Johnson, who was placed on administrative leave Friday while the incident is investigated.

Johnson reportedly told investigators that he had acted in self-defense.

Karley was euthanized a few hours after the incident, which occurred about 4:30 p.m. Monday.

Karley apparently had run across Johnson's yard and into the next yard.

Travis Staggs said he started walking the dog home from his yard when Johnson offered to take Karley home.

"Then something in his head snapped and he started beating the dog," Staggs said.

Johnson allegedly punched Karley with a closed fist about a dozen times and then beat her with an 11-inch rock, Staggs said, adding that he tried to stop Johnson but was pushed away.

Authorities received two calls from the 17000 block of Armintrout Drive: one from a woman who said her husband was attacked by a dog, and another from a man who said his neighbor had beaten a dog, Riverside County Sheriff's Sgt. David Barton said in a statement.

After Brandon Toole, 19, saw the injured dog, his 17-year-old sister, Heather, rushed the animal to a veterinarian, and later an animal intensive care unit.

Karley was euthanized because she was so badly injured, said Jeff Toole, the teenagers' father.

"I can't describe the way [Karley] looked and the pain she was in," Brandon Toole said.

Police said Johnson was taken to a hospital for wrist and thumb injuries.

Jeff Toole said the thumb puncture occurred when Johnson grabbed Karley's mouth and broke her jaw.

Johnson told his bosses about the incident, which he described as self-defense, said Los Angeles County Fire Chief P. Michael Freeman.

"The Los Angeles County Fire Department is deeply concerned with allegations regarding Assistant Chief Glynn Johnson's actions in the beating of his neighbor's dog," Freeman said in a statement.

The Riverside County Sheriff's Department is investigating. Malicious and intentional injuring of an animal is a felony.

The Toole family said Karley was a well-behaved dog.

"We are going to have to find another place to live," Jeff Toole said.

Press Release

Date/Time Written: Friday, November 7, 2008
Type of Incident: Animal Cruelty Investigation
Date/Time of Incident: Monday, November 3, 2008, 4:30 PM
Location of Incident: 17000 block Armintrout Drive, Riverside (Woodcrest)
Reporting Officer: Sergeant David Barton, 951-210-1000
File Number: PC08308035
Contact Person: Sr. Investigator Cherie Blossfield, 951-210-1000

On Monday afternoon, November 3, at about 4:30 PM, Riverside County Sheriff's deputies were called to a home on Armintrout Drive in the unincorporated community of Woodcrest.

Two calls were received, minutes apart. One was from a woman who stated her husband had just been attacked by a dog. Another call was received from a male, who stated his neighbor had just beaten someone's dog with a boulder.

When deputies arrived, they were told by a witness that a nearby resident had severely beaten a dog belonging to another neighbor. The dog had been found by the witness near his home and he was returning it to the owner when the neighbor, who lived next door to the owner of the dog, offered to return it for him. After turning the dog over to the neighbor, the witness saw him beating the dog with his hands. At one point, the witness claimed he saw him use a nearby rock to strike the dog. The injured dog was taken by its owner to a veterinarian, where it was euthanized.

A deputy contacted the neighbor later at a Riverside area hospital, where he was being treated for an injury to his wrist and thumb. He claimed he had been attacked by the dog and only struck it in self defense.

After the initial investigation by deputies was done, the Perris Station Investigations Unit took over the investigation. A thorough investigation is being done in order to determine if a crime has been committed. California Penal Code 597 makes it a felony for anyone who maliciously and intentionally maims, mutilates, tortures, or wounds a living animal. At the conclusion of this investigation, if evidence indicates a crime has occurred, the case will be referred to the Riverside County District Attorney for their review.

This investigation is currently in-progress. Anyone with information regarding this incident is encouraged to contact Sr. Investigator Cherie Blossfield at the Perris Station at (951) 210-1000.

Letter from Karley the Puppy's owner:

My name is Brandon Toole, we live next door to Glynn. here is the entire story...any help at all would be greatly appriciated to get this man off the force and behind bars!

Assistant Fire Chief Glynn Johnson (our neighbor) brutally beat our six month old sheppard mix (42lbs) with his own two hands. Apparently, Karley, our six month old puppy opened our gates and snuck out (we believe that Glynn acually let her out but there is no proof), then ran through Glynn's yard into Travis' (neighbor on the other side of Glynn) driveway where he was backing down a boat. Travis took Carly by the collar and proceeded to walk her back up to our yard when Glynn offered to take her back. As Glynn thought he was out of sight, he hit Carly closed fist over the head multiple times, grabbed her jaws and ripped them apart, and then grabbed an eleven-inch rock and continued to beat her with it, eventually crushing her skull. She finally got away somehow because there is a trail of blood for about 100 yards to where we finally found her. Travis tried to stop Glen at some point but was knocked down. My sister and I found Carly in a gully laying helplessly in some brush, the visual of her laying there is just sickening, her right eye was bulging almost to the point it was out of the socket, her left eye swollen shut, she has blood all over her face and intestine-like things hanging from her mouth. My sister, Heather, who nearly passed out, took her to the vet imediatly. From there we were sent to a specialist in Murrieta where she was eventually put to sleep. If there is anything you can do to help take this man off the streets and put him behind bars, that would be greatly appriciated!

If you do not have a weak stomach, please view this photo, it was takin at the vet right after the incident. http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b157/redrider825/karley_edit.jpg

If you feel you can help in any way, please feel free to contact us at 951-780-2822 thank you soo much!

Editors Notes and thoughts: San Quentin prison is the first thought!

This "Big Man" maliciously and intentionally maims, mutilates, and tortures a neighbors pet Puppy without arrest because he identified himself as a Fire chief???

He should be held on a couple million dollars bail at the very least, what if this madman hurts others while out? Witnesses state he has struck his pregnant daughter with closed fist previously and was not arrested! This outrageous!

I publish articles about firefighter great deeds done well, Heroic actions done without a second thought, all the great things done everyday by public safety professionals almost everyday.

You simply cannot find a more pro firefighter publication than California Fire News but along with all that good news comes a little bit of bad news and this is real bad news!.

To think a 40 year veteran firefighter could kill a Puppy with closed fist's and a large 11 inch rock, crushing the Puppy's skull and ear canals, Purposely breaking the Puppy's jaws with his large hands, etc, etc.

Young teenage witnesses tried to pull the Chief physically off of the puppy during his rage, but the violence continued!

This is a felony - If the charges are true as they appear this man should never work in public service again.
And a way of removing his PERS retirement benefits should he be convicted of a felony should be made available under law.

Also why is the Chief is receiving special treatment?

"The Riverside County Sheriff's Department is investigating. Malicious and intentional injuring of an animal is a felony."
Any regular citizen would already be arrested! This man is a neighborhood terrorist! This is not a "He said She said" case there are many witnesses and a fresh crime scene.

What about the DA adding assault and battery charges for assaulting the teenager that was pushed away while trying to intervene in this slaughter?

The County should stop the paid leave right now! There are enough witnesses to this tragedy to justify firing this "Big Man" right now! To think a man of his size, stature, position and experience could do this and to continue as witnesses tried to stop him...

The Tooles say there is a "history of violence" with Glynn Johnson, and deputies say they are looking into these claims as well.

"This man needs to go to prison for what he did," says Shelley Toole.
She adds, "Karley was my baby, and he took her away from me."

The LACFD Fire and Police incident reports need to be released soon. It sounds as if the dog was left uncared for under some brush, while the Chief was treated for his minor injuries, Also too bad they did not use the staged ambulance for transporting the dog the little bit of positive PR would of been well worth it, for this is truly a sad day in the history of the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

  2. They cannot cover this one up. He is so disturbed he couldn't even stop in front of a witness. This is sick and this man is clearly angry and unstable and I'm sure he will try to use the race card as usual. He needs to pay the price and even a bigger price because he is a fire chief. Someone we are supposed to trust. The vision of firemen I've always had save kitty's stuck in a tree's. This changes my vision. When your a fire chief and you have this behavior it's scary because he calls the shots and others follow suite. How can a grown beat a puppy to death. If he gets away with this, what will this sat to other animal abusers. Does he beat women and children too. This ass-hole needs to pay a huge price. I say an eye for an eye.. with a 11" rock!! See if this coward can handle the pain but since that is unlikely how about locking him up and losing the key!!! To think this man might have people out there who love him. Poor Karley...I feel sick again*

  3. The D.A. must arrest this man and hold him accountable for his actions. To do less would be ignoring the obvious. Just because Johnson is an employee of the Fire Dep. does not mean he is above the law. Please arrest Glynn Johnson.

  4. Johnson appears to be vicious! merciless! and cruel. He seems to be as of a sadistic nature to inflict such agonizing and excruciating pain to a puppy.
With all due respect to sweet female puppy Karley. please, for God's sake, Prosecute this man to the max. The puppy didn't deserve to die such a brutal death. Demon (his middle name) Johnson broke the law, he must pay for murdering an innocent puppy. Murder is justified to the max.

****REMINDER**** Every fire has the ability to be catastrophic. The wildland fire management environment has profoundly changed. Growing numbers of communities, across the nation, are experiencing longer fire seasons; more frequent, bigger, and more severe, fires are a real threat. Be careful with all campfires and equipment.
