This report will be updated daily.

August 27 , 2008

Initial attack activity was light across the nation with 172 new fires reported. Three new large fires were reported, two in Idaho and one in Utah. Firefighters contained three fires, one each in Colorado, Idaho and Washington.

Predicted "Red Flag" conditions in Nevada caused the East Slide Rock Ridge fire to gain almost 11,000 acres yesterday. Residents in Murphy Hot Springs are under precautionary evacuation orders.

Weather Discussion: Northerly, offshore winds will continue in Northern California with poor overnight relative humidity recovery. A high pressure ridge building along the West Coast will bring warmer and drier conditions to much of the West. Dry and windy conditions will continue for Montana and Wyoming. Heavy rainfall will move into the Mid-Atlantic states.

****REMINDER**** Every fire has the ability to be catastrophic. The wildland fire management environment has profoundly changed. Growing numbers of communities, across the nation, are experiencing longer fire seasons; more frequent, bigger, and more severe, fires are a real threat. Be careful with all campfires and equipment.

"I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts, and beer." --Abraham Lincoln
