CAL FIRE NEWS: Hikers found after night on beach

Three missing hikers rescued from the beach

BIG SUR - Three missing hikers were found trapped between two cliffs near the beach near Cooper Point in Big Sur on Saturday morning, according to Monterey County Sheriff's deputies.

The Sheriff's search and rescue team was called to the area Friday after receiving a report that the hikers had not returned from what should have been a 2-mile hike in the area.

Officials searched the area through the night without success.

On Saturday morning, the sheriff's new helicopter was summoned to the area and personnel on board the helicopter found the hikers within 30 minutes, according to deputies.

The helicopter landed on the beach and transported the hikers to safety.

According to deputies, the area was inaccessible to searchers from the ground due to the extreme terrain and the tidal conditions.

****REMINDER**** Every fire has the ability to be catastrophic. The wildland fire management environment has profoundly changed. Growing numbers of communities, across the nation, are experiencing longer fire seasons; more frequent, bigger, and more severe, fires are a real threat. Be careful with all campfires and equipment.

"I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts, and beer." --Abraham Lincoln
