First Brand new piece of equipment in its 34-year history — The Kenworth replaces a 35-year-old Big Sur Volunteer Fire Department water tender that was donated to the brigade.
(photo needed?)
The new water tender, which the 30-member volunteer brigade will put on display at its annual benefit barbecue May 17 at Big Sur Pfeiffer State Park, will help cover the 600 square mile area between Hurricane Point and the San Luis Obispo County line.
The truck's short wheelbase will allow it to travel on most of the Big Sur back-country's narrow roads was acquired with a $200,000 grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
The brigade's other water tender, which can haul 4,000 gallons of water, can't go off-road because of its size, Karstens said.
We pretty much have antiques," Karstens said.
