San Bernardino blaze chars 60 acres

A fire burned about 60 acres in the Sand Canyon area on the north side of San Bernardino and into the foothills Thursday.

About 130 city, Cal Fire and U.S. Forest Service firefighters fought the blaze in light, flashy brush but they expected to fully contain the fire by midnight, said Steve Tracy, San Bernardino City Fire Department spokesman.

A CalFire plane surveys the fire scene Thursday in the hills in the Sand Canyon area of San Bernardino. No structures were threatened. Fire officials expected to have the blaze fully contained by midnight.

No structures were threatened but anxious Del Rosa area neighbors lined East Foothill Drive near Manzanita Drive to watch. The cause of the fire was under investigation.

****REMINDER**** Every fire has the ability to be catastrophic. The wildland fire management environment has profoundly changed. Growing numbers of communities, across the nation, are experiencing longer fire seasons; more frequent, bigger, and more severe, fires are a real threat. Be careful with all campfires and equipment.

"I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts, and beer." --Abraham Lincoln
