CURRENT SITUATION

Initial attack activity was moderate yesterday with 204 new fires reported burning 58,192 acres. Currently, there are 38 fires and complexes over 500 acres in size. Yesterday there were two new fires over 500 acres and five were contained.

The National Preparedness Level is 5. Large fire activity is occurring in multiple geographic areas and there is a heavy commitment of crews, aircraft and equipment to these incidents. Hot, dry, windy conditions continue to be in the forecast. Nationally, there are nine Type 1 and seventeen Type 2 Incident Management Teams (IMT) committed. Four Area Command Teams and one National Incident Management Organization Team are also assigned.

INCIDENT HEADLINES

  • Northern Rockies: Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer has declared a State of Emergency in his state due to the wildland fire situation and is planning to visit the Jocko Lakes fire today. Jocko Lakes is 15,000 acres and 10 percent contained. Evacuations remain in effect. 1,500 residences and 100 commercial properties are threatened. The Ahorn is 44,100 acres and two percent contained. Evacuations remain in effect and 162 residences are threatened. The Sawmill Complex is 10,850 acres and 5 percent contained. Evacuations remain in effect. 190 residences and seven commercial properties are threatened.
  • Southern California: The Zaca is 69,375 acres and 68 percent contained. Evacuation orders remain in effect and more are possible. 453 residences are threatened. Due to the spread of the fire in two opposite directions and increasing complexity, two Type 1 National Incident Management Teams and an Area Command Team have been assigned.
  • Eastern Area: The Sleeper, in Michigan, is 10,000 acres and 20 percent contained. Evacuations are in effect and 25 residences are threatened.
  • Nationally, an estimated 1,223 structures have been lost to date.
  • There are 19,358 personnel committed to wildland fires nationally, an increase of 196 (1.0%) from yesterday.

An Area Command Team (Zimmerman) is assigned to assist the Northern Rockies in analyzing assessments for long duration fires and emerging incidents.

Jocko Lakes is burning twenty-six miles northeast of Missoula, MT in timber, litter and understory. A Type 2 IMT (McNitt) and a Type 1 IMT (Wilcock) are assigned. Backing fire with short runs was observed. The community of Seeley Lake and numerous structures are threatened. Evacuations and Highway 83 restrictions are in effect. Reduction in acreage is due to more accurate mapping.

Skyland is burning forty-five miles east of Whitefish, MT in timber, litter and understory trees and shrubs. Transfer of command from a Type 2 IMT (LaFave) to a Type 1 IMT (Pendleton) will occur tomorrow. Backing fire with some spotting was observed. Structures are threatened.

Chippy Creek is burning forty-two miles southwest of Kalispell, MT in timber and understory. An IMT Type 2 (Raley) is assigned. Extreme fire behavior with group tree torching was observed. Structures are threatened.

Ahorn is burning thirty miles west of Augusta, MT in timber litter. An IMT Type 1 (Whitney) is assigned. Creeping and smoldering with group tree torching was observed. Structures are threatened.

Meriwether is burning thirty-seven miles northwest of Helena, MT in timber and grass. An IMT Type 1 (Oltrogge) is assigned. Backing fire and spotting were observed. Structures are threatened.

Rattlesnake is burning twenty-five miles south of Elk City, ID in timber, timber litter and grass. It includes the previously reported Concord fire. An IMT Type 2 (Secrest) is assigned. Active surface fire with isolated torching was observed. The community of Comstock is threatened.

Sawmill Complex, consisting of three fires previously reported as Sawmill Creek, Wyman #2 and Fisher Point, is burning twenty-two miles southeast of Missoula, MT in timber. An IMT Type 2 (Heintz) is assigned. Moderate fire behavior with uphill runs, torching and backing fire was observed. Structures are threatened. Evacuations are in effect.

Brush Creek is burning twenty-five miles west of Whitefish, MT in timber and understory vegetation. An IMT Type 2 (Koehler) is assigned. Uphill crown runs with long range-spotting were observed. Structures are threatened.

Rombo Mountain is burning eighteen miles south of Darby, MT in timber and understory. A FUMT (Svalberg) is assigned. Crown runs, group tree torching and spotting were observed. Structures are threatened.

Echo Springs is burning six miles southwest of St. Maries, ID in timber and logging slash. An IMT Type 2 (Kaage) is assigned. No new information was received.

Bridge is burning forty-five miles southwest of Missoula, MT in timber and understory. Short crown runs with long-range spotting were observed.

Poe Cabin is burning twenty-three miles southwest of Grangeville, ID in timber and grass. An IMT Type 2 (Sciacca) is assigned. Isolated torching and creeping were observed.

Fool Creek is burning thirty miles northwest of Choteau, MT in timber litter. Surface fire with short crown runs and isolated torching was observed. Structures are threatened.

Conger Creek is burning twenty miles north of Ovando, MT in timber. Moderate fire behavior with torching, spotting and backing was observed. Structures are threatened.

Pattengail Creek is burning ten miles northeast of Wisdom, MT in timber with large numbers of dead trees killed by insects. Surface fire with group tree torching and spotting was observed.

Chimney Complex is burning nineteen miles south of Lewiston, ID in timber and grass. Creeping, smoldering and isolated torching were observed.

Garceau is burning fifty-five miles south of Whitefish, MT in timber and grass. No new information was received. This will be the last report unless new information is received.

Owl is burning forty-five miles south of Bozeman, MT in timber and grass. No new information was received. This will be the last report unless new information is received.

Moose Creek, consisting of ten fires, is burning thirty-two miles west of Darby, MT. Short crown runs, long-range spotting and torching were observed. No further information was received.

Mile Marker 124 is burning nineteen miles southeast of Missoula, MT in timber and grass. An IMT Type 2 (Angell) is assigned. This fire is contained.

Area Command Team (Ribar) is assigned to manage large fires for the Boise and Payette National Forests.

Cascade Complex, consisting of four fires, is burning three miles northeast of Cascade, ID in timber and timber litter. Transfer of command from a Type 1 IMT (Opliger) to an Type 1 IMT (Broyles) is ongoing. Moderate fire behavior with torching and short-range spotting was observed. The community of Yellow Pine and numerous structures are threatened.

East Zone Complex, consisting of three fires, is burning thirty miles northeast of McCall, ID in timber litter. Transfer of command from a Type 1 IMT (Pincha-Tulley) to NIMO (Ferguson) will occur tomorrow. Active fire behavior torching and long-range spotting was observed. The communities of Secesh and Warren, historic sites and bridges are threatened.

Combine is burning thirty-one miles south of American Falls, ID in Brush. Extreme fire behavior with running was observed. Structures are threatened.

Raines is burning thirty-eight miles northeast of McCall, ID in timber and grass. Transfer of command from FUMT (Ourada/Soper) to a NIMO team (Ferguson) will occur tomorrow. Active fire behavior with torching and short runs was observed. Structures are threatened. Reduction in acreage is due to the assignment of the northern portion of this fire to the Rattlesnake fire.

Shower Bath is burning eighteen miles northwest of Challis, ID in timber. A Type 2 IMT (Saleen) is assigned. Group tree torching was observed.

Middle Fork Complex, consisting of five fires, is burning fifteen miles northeast of Garden Valley, ID in timber and brush. Transfer of command from a Type 2 IMT (Harvey) to Type 2 IMT (Lund) will occur today. Active surface fire with torching and spotting was observed. Structures are threatened.

Trapper Ridge is burning twenty-eight miles northeast of Idaho City, ID in timber litter. An IMT Type 2 (Lund) is assigned. Wind-driven fire activity was observed. Structures are threatened.

Krassel Complex, consisting of six fires, is burning forty-four miles northeast of Yellow Pine, ID in grass, brush, timber litter and downed logs. Active fire behavior was observed.

Granite Creek is burning fifteen miles southeast of Jackson, WY in timber and dead and down timber. Smoldering and creeping were observed.

Walcott is burning thirty miles northeast of Burley, ID in brush and grass. This fire is contained.

Hubbard is burning on private land twenty-two miles northwest of Malad City, ID in grass and brush. This fire is contained.

Dead Eye is burning nineteen miles southeast of Twin Falls, ID in grass and sage brush. This fire is contained.

Colman Mountain is burning thirty-seven miles west of Burns, OR in sage brush, juniper and grass. Active fire behavior with significant runs was observed.

Butte Fire is burning sixteen miles south of Juntura, OR in grass and brush. Wind-driven fire behavior was observed. Structures and power lines are threatened.

WEATHER OUTLOOK

RED FLAG WARNINGS HAVE BEEN POSTED FOR PORTIONS OF NORTHERN AND EASTERN IDAHO, WESTERN AND CENTRAL MONTANA AND WESTERN AND CENTRAL NORTH DAKOTA FOR GUSTY WINDS AND LOW RELATIVE HUMIDITY.

It will be windy over portions of the Northwest and Montana. Windy conditions are expected today east of the Cascades and along the east slopes of the Montana Rockies. Thunderstorms are expected over portions of Idaho and Montana. Southern California will see a deep marine layer along the coast with warm, dry weather over the mountains and inland valleys.
