Firefighters battle blaze near Weed

WEED — A fire reported at 12:44 p.m. Monday burned about 50 acres of brush southeast of Weed by late afternoon.

California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection firefighters battled the blaze between the Roseburg Mill and Weed High School about 2:30 p.m. Bulldozers were used to dig a line to protect a log deck at the mill, a Cal Fire spokesman said. High winds were blowing the fire and causing spot fires.

The blaze was 80 percent contained at 7:30 p.m., Cal Fire said. No homes were threatened, but one minor injury occurred.

Cal Fire in Siskiyou County requested help from U.S. Forest Service personnel, Klamath National Forest personnel, and Cal Fire firefighters in Tehama, Lassen and Humboldt counties.

****REMINDER**** Every fire has the ability to be catastrophic. The wildland fire management environment has profoundly changed. Growing numbers of communities, across the nation, are experiencing longer fire seasons; more frequent, bigger, and more severe, fires are a real threat. Be careful with all campfires and equipment.

"I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts, and beer." --Abraham Lincoln
