On December 20, 2013 CAL FIRE Fire Captain Pete Santana passed away at the age of 64 after a nearly two year courageous battle with job-related cancer.
Pete, a Vietnam-era US Army veteran and a native of New York City, went to work for Gilroy Rural FPD in 1972, promoting to captain five years later. In 1993, he transferred to Patterson, where he received a Superior Accomplishment Award from CAL FIRE for his pivotal role on a statewide Development and Design Committee for a new, state of the art, all-risk fire engine. He retired in 2005.
He is survived by his wife Nancy and his children, son Michael and daughter Danielle.

****REMINDER**** Every fire has the ability to be catastrophic. The wildland fire management environment has profoundly changed. Growing numbers of communities, across the nation, are experiencing longer fire seasons; more frequent, bigger, and more severe, fires are a real threat. Be careful with all campfires and equipment.

"I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts, and beer." --Abraham Lincoln
