#Solar Radiation Storm, in progress over the past 12 hours, CME is expected to impact earths magnetic field in two days

Solar Radiation Storm Hits S3 (Strong)
A Huge Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) has been observed leaving the blast site and does has a strong earth bound component.

Active Region 11745 unleashed an eruption peaking to M5.0 at13:32 UTC today. Associated with this blast was a 10cm Radio Burst (Ten Flare) measuring 350 Solar Flux Units. A Huge Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) has been observed leaving the blast site and does has a strong earth bound component. The CME is expected to impact earths magnetic field in two days where a strong geomagnetic storm should result.

The Solar Radiation Storm, in progress over the past 12 hours, reached S3 (Strong) levels at approximately 0300 UTC on May 23 (11:00 p.m. EDT May 22).

Solar Storm preparation tips:
Several power outages have happened in recent months due to solar storm activity. Below are some general guidance tips.

  • Get an old fashioned papermap (your GPS might fail)
  • Unplug delicate electrical devices to prevent surge damage
  • Check your fire extinguisher, as electrical surges can sometimes cause fires
  • Get some spare cash for food, gas and incidentals (ATMS could be out)
  • Top off your gas tank (if power goes out, pumps will not work)
  • Write down key phone numbers from your phone
  • Ensure your generator is ready, and you have fuel in the event of power grid issues
  • Plan to leave early for destinations as it can disrupt traffic patterns and communications
  • Exercise patience, be alert for sudden surge or electrical disruptions and be a good neighbor
Discuss your 303 plan with your family. Where and when would you meet if you lost communications.

The higher energies (>50 MeV and >100 MeV, shown in blue and green, respectively, in the top panel of the Satellite Environment Plot below left) have been stable or declining through the interval. The solar region that started it all has been quiet since, as it makes west limb passage. Follow the evolution of the event here.

The 2013 Space Weather Enterprise Forum (SWEF) will be held on June 4th in Silver Spring, MD. The National Space Weather Program members have organized an outstanding agenda with speakers from government, industry, and academia. ****REMINDER**** Every fire has the ability to be catastrophic. The wildland fire management environment has profoundly changed. Growing numbers of communities, across the nation, are experiencing longer fire seasons; more frequent, bigger, and more severe, fires are a real threat. Be careful with all campfires and equipment.

"I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts, and beer." --Abraham Lincoln
