Paramedic Shot While Driving in Oakland Hills
Victim was a paramedic who worked in San Jose
NBC Bay Area has learned the man who was shot in broad daylight in the Oakland hills Tuesday is a Santa Clara County paramedic. Late Tuesday night, he was identified as 34-year-old Quinn Boyer who worked in San Jose.
On Wednesday, Boyer was still in critical condition after being shot multiple times and crashing his car down an embankment at Keller and Handsom Avenues in the Oakland hills.
The gunman is still at large, and police say the shooting may have stemmed from an unrelated robbery attempt near where Boyer was stopped at an intersection in his Honda.
"Either the driver or another person shot the man in his car, who drove across the street and down the ravine," Oakland Police Sgt. Arturo Bautista said.
Boyer is a paramedic with Santa Clara County Ambulance. NBC Bay Area also learned his wife is a paramedic in Oakland.
Melissa Shafer lives a few blocks from the shooting scene with her husband, daughter Nina, and another child expected in July.
Shortly after that child is born, they say they are moving out of Oakland to escape the growing crime wave.
"The police situation is well known, so few officers, and the bad guys are just coming up the hill," Shafer said.
Mario Berber has lived one block from the crime scene for 38 years and is now putting in a surveillance camera system.
"When the economy gets bad, you see more robberies and burglaries and stuff like that," Berber said.
And one man, who did not want to give his name for fear of retaliation, was robbed at gunpoint in his driveway last year. "They popped out of nowhere and took our valuables. He had what looked like a revolver."
Neighbors have formed a safety committee and patrol their own streets; something police with their withered ranks can no longer do.
Neighbor Hasani Gough put it this way, "I know if someone's shot, some guy prowling around my house is not going to be their first priority."
