What: Cal Fire helicopter 101 sustained major damage during an emergency landing Tuesday afternoon,   according to Cal Fire Mendocino Unit Information Officer Julie Cooley.  "It was not a crash, it was an emergency landing, but it was a hard landing," Cooley said.  The copter was heavily damaged, but the pilot and seven firefighters aboard were uninjured, she said. It was unknown at this time whether the helicopter could be repaired or needed to be replaced.

Where: South of the Cal Fire Howard Forest helipad near the town of Willits.

Why: She had no further details Tuesday evening about why the helicopter made an emergency landing not far from the helipad just before 2 p.m.

Who: CAL FIRE, Willits/Little Lake Fire Department, CHP and Ukiah Ambulance responded to the scene as a precaution.

  1. I remeber a rotor strike, a bucket bump and a hydraulic failure on copter 101 back in the day. Glad no one was hurt.

****REMINDER**** Every fire has the ability to be catastrophic. The wildland fire management environment has profoundly changed. Growing numbers of communities, across the nation, are experiencing longer fire seasons; more frequent, bigger, and more severe, fires are a real threat. Be careful with all campfires and equipment.

"I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts, and beer." --Abraham Lincoln
