Colorado: Battlement Creek Wildfire Fatalities Drove Fire Shelter Protocol

On the Battlement Creek fire in Colorado, two separate incidents resulted in four fatalities. 

In Memoriam– On July 16th, 1976, air tanker pilot Don Goodman was killed when his B-26 crashed while dropping retardant. 
 The following day, Morman Lake Hotshots Anthony Czak, Stephen Furey, and Scott Nelson were were killed when they were overrun by fire during a burnout operation. 
Following this fire, it became standard protocol for firefighters to carry fire shelters.
