Nor Cal News: Wolf OR-7 returns to Oregon - #OR-7 Updates, Pics and Facts

Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife said Friday that the latest GPS tracking collar data put male wolf,  OR-7 in Klamath County on Thursday and in Jackson County at midnight.
Wolf OR-7 was located in Oregon for the first time since late December.
OR-7, has spent the last couple of months in Northern California and now has crossed the border back into his home state. Just before members of his pack in northeastern Oregon were put under a kill order for preying on livestock, OR-7 lit out for new territory last September.

OR-7 Facts: OR-7 had been in northern Siskiyou County, Calif., less than 10 miles from the Oregon-California border for the past 12 days. While OR-7 crossed a state boundary yesterday, his movement was small, only traveling about 30 miles. While OR-7 is west of Highways 395-78-95 in Oregon, he remains protected by both the federal and state Endangered Species Acts. California Fish and Game has been updating his status on their Web site - Link.

  • The State of California is not intentionally reintroducing wolves.
  • Gray wolves pose little direct risk to humans.
  • Any wolf that enters California is protected as endangered under the federal Endangered Species Act.
  • OR-7 was the first known wolf in California in 87 years.
  • He has trekked more than 1,000 miles across highways, deserts and mountains, looking for a mate and a new home territory. OR-7 left the Imnaha pack in September 2011 and went through Baker, Grant, Lake, Crook, Harney, Deschutes, Klamath and Jackson counties before entering California on Dec. 28, 2011
  • While in California, he travelled through eastern Siskiyou County, northeastern Shasta County and then resided in Lassen County for a few weeks.
  • There have been no livestock attacks confirmed along his path.

****REMINDER**** Every fire has the ability to be catastrophic. The wildland fire management environment has profoundly changed. Growing numbers of communities, across the nation, are experiencing longer fire seasons; more frequent, bigger, and more severe, fires are a real threat. Be careful with all campfires and equipment.

"I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts, and beer." --Abraham Lincoln
