CAL FIRE NEWS: Soledad City Council OKs 3½-year deal w/ Cal Fire

CalFire will provide fire protection to the city of Soledad starting Jan.1. 2012

Facing a budget shortage of about $800,000 the Soledad City Council voted unanimously on Wednesday to approve a 3½-year agreement with Cal Fire. The deal is expected to save the city $654,134 compared to maintaining its own fire department.

"During this time of difficult budgets, it was necessary for the city to consider entering into this cooperative agreement with Cal Fire," Mayor Fred Ledesma said in a news release.

The council also approved an agreement with members of the Soledad city fire department describing the terms of their transition to state employees.

****REMINDER**** Every fire has the ability to be catastrophic. The wildland fire management environment has profoundly changed. Growing numbers of communities, across the nation, are experiencing longer fire seasons; more frequent, bigger, and more severe, fires are a real threat. Be careful with all campfires and equipment.

"I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts, and beer." --Abraham Lincoln
