A story in the San Diego Union-Tribune has reported that San Diego Gas and Electric Co. (SDG&E) is claiming eminent domain to secure access to land it needs for the planned Sunrise Powerlink transmission project - a 123-mile line from Imperial County to San Diego. According to Union-Tribune writer Onell Soto, most of the land the utility requires to complete the project is federal property, and SDG&E is working with the U.S. Forest Service to secure approval. But the Powerlink route also runs through several dozen pieces of private property, and the utility has initiated eminent-domain court proceedings to help expedite the claiming of that land. The California Public Utilities Commission and the Bureau of Land Management have both approved the Sunrise Powerlink project. The nod from the U.S. Forest Service is the last significant hurdle. ****REMINDER**** Every fire has the ability to be catastrophic. The wildland fire management environment has profoundly changed. Growing numbers of communities, across the nation, are experiencing longer fire seasons; more frequent, bigger, and more severe, fires are a real threat. Be careful with all campfires and equipment.
