Sac Metro Fire captain arrested in child porn investigation

A Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District captain was arrested late Tuesday on suspicion of using the Internet to exchange child pornography, Citrus Heights police said Wednesday.

Steven Campbell was arrested as the result of an ongoing investigation in child pornography, the police said in a press release.

Investigators also searched Campbell's residence in the 4800 block of Polo Court, Fair Oaks.

Campbell is a 30-year veteran with Sac Metro Fire, the district said in a press release. He has been placed on administrative leave, pending outcome of the investigation, the release said.

Campbell has subsequently retired, the release said.

"The charges are very serious and we are committed to fully (cooperating) with the Citrus Heights Police Department," the release said.

The investigation into Campbell's activities began after the Citrus Heights Police Department developed information that Campbell was trying to contact "young girls" via the Internet, said Lt. Thomas Chaplin.

Chaplin said the investigation began three months ago.

The Sacramento Regional Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force assisted with the service of the search warrant and subsequent forensic analysis of electronic media, the release said.

The captain is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
