Cal Fire Captain Christopher Ennis of Bakersfield worked out of the Owens Valley Camp and was a firefighter for 17 years. He was 43.
During the summer, Ennis left work when he got sick after battling the Telegraph Fire in northern California, according to Cal Fire Captain Mike Ramirez. It was not known if fighting the Telegraph Fire contributed to Ennis' illness, Ramirez said.
Cal Fire Capt. Christopher Ennis will have a firefighter’s funeral at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Phillip the Apostle Church at 7100 Stockdale Highway.Ennis is survived by his wife, Sydney, 5-year-old son Evan, parents Harry and Maureen Ennis, sister Stephanie and brothers: Dan, Jon, Jim and Mark.
Ennis earned a degree from Butte College. After graduation, he worked as a firefighter for the Kern County Fire Department and later Cal Fire.According to family members Ennis was born in Vallejo and moved to Bakersfield when he was 6 years old, He graduated from West High School in 1983.
Ennis loved camping, backpacking and fishing.
