August 6, 2008

Firefighters contained the Telegraph Fire in southern California at 34,091 acres. The Craig Fire, Ukonom Complex, Iron and Alps Complexes, and Yolla Bolly Complex remain active in northern California.

Nationally, a total of 36 wildland fires and 512,072 acres burned were reported. Five new large fires started: three in Texas and one each in Kansas and Idaho. Five large fires were also contained: three in Texas and one each in California and Washington.

Australia and New Zealand are providing 44 fire specialists and managers to assist with fire suppression operations in California.

Weather Discussion: Thunderstorms, including dry lightning, are forecasted today over northern California, Oregon, Washington, northern Great Basin, and western Wyoming. Wetter thunderstorms are expected for southern California, Nevada, Utah, and Colorado. Hot weather will continue over the western states today.

Bear Wallow Complex (Klamath National Forest): 13,073 acres at 19 percent contained. This complex of two fires is 13 miles southeast of Happy Camp. Voluntary evacuations are in effect as well as road closures.

Blue 2 (Six Rivers National Forest): 7,718 acres at 63 percent contained. This fire is 12 miles east of Klamath. Cultural and communication sites are threatened. Trails and roads are closed.

Canyon Complex (Plumas National Forest): 37,357 acres at 93 percent contained. This complex of three fires is 16 miles northeast of Paradise. Minimal fire activity was reported.

Craig (Butte Unit, Cal Fire): 2,500 acres at 20 percent contained. This fire is located 12 miles east of Oroville. Residences and cultural sites are currently threatened. Evacuations and road closures are in place.

Iron and Alps Complex (Shasta-Trinity National Forest): 86,366 acres at 79 percent contained. This complex of two fires is one mile north of Junction City. Residences remain threatened.

Lime Complex (Shasta-Trinity National Forest): 63,263 acres at 95 percent contained. This complex of two fires is 14 miles west of Hayfork. Fire behavior included creeping, smoldering, torching, and spot fires.

Panther (Klamath National Forest): 9,806 acres at eight percent contained. This fire is 14 miles southwest of Happy Camp. Active fire behavior was reported.

Rich (Plumas National Forest): 6,570 acres at 57 percent contained. This fire is 20 miles west of Quincy. Residences remain threatened. Traffic is restricted on state highway 70.

Sherwin (Inyo National Forest): 347 acres at 40 percent contained. This fire is three miles southeast of Mammoth Lakes. Structures are threatened. A campground and trails are closed near the fire.

Siskiyou Complex (Klamath National Forest): 58,335 acres at 63 percent contained. This complex is 18 miles southwest of Happy Camp. Cultural sites remain threatened. Moderate fire activity was reported.
