Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger today released the following statement regarding the death of Wildland Firefighter Andrew "Andy" Palmer, of Port Townsend, WA:
"Since the beginning of these devastating fires, California has had the bravest and most dedicated firefighters working on the front lines. Wildland Firefighter Andy Palmer lost his life while selflessly protecting our communities and Californians are forever indebted to his heroic service and sacrifice. On behalf of all Californians, Maria and I send our thoughts and prayers to Andy's family and friends during this difficult time."
Palmer, 18, died July 25, while working on the Eagle Fire in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest. Palmer was a wildland firefighter assigned to an engine crew at the Olympic National Park in Port Angeles, WA.
In honor of Wildland Firefighter Andrew Palmer, Capitol flags will be flown at half-staff.

****REMINDER**** Every fire has the ability to be catastrophic. The wildland fire management environment has profoundly changed. Growing numbers of communities, across the nation, are experiencing longer fire seasons; more frequent, bigger, and more severe, fires are a real threat. Be careful with all campfires and equipment.
