Los Angeles Firefighters were reportedly transporting a seriously ill 83 year-old male to an area hospital with the emergency warning equipment on their ambulance activated, when their vehicle was struck by a compact sedan.
Location: Temescal Canyon Road and Pacific Coast Highway, TG 637-J7; FS 23.
Resources: 8 Companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, 3 LAFD Rescue Ambulances, 1 Heavy Rescue, 1 Helicopter, 1 LAFD Tractor Transport, 1 EMS Battalion Captain, 1 Battalion Chief Officer Command Team and 1 Division Chief Officer Command Team, a total of 55 Los Angeles Fire Department personnel under the direction of Battalion Chief Randy Beaty
On Order: Requesting a Task Force for trapped victims
and 1 Air Ambulance, and 3 RA's.
Injuries: Minor injury to LAFD member transported for evaluation, driver of other auto critical air ambulance to hospital.
Original patient trans by ground ambulance unkown condition.
Injury update: The four Firefighters aboard the ambulance when the collision occurred sustained significant but non-life threatening injury. They were taken to St. John's Medical Center in Santa Monica, where all were treated and released by noon.
The 23 year-old female driver and sole occupant of the sedan was briefly trapped before Firefighters using hydraulic power tools freed her from the wreckage. She was subsequently transported to the UCLA Medical Center in Westwood by LAFD Air Ambulance in critical condition.
The ill octogenarian in the ambulance at the time of impact was swiftly transferred to another LAFD ambulance for ground-based transportation to the UCLA Medical Center in Westwood. He sustained no obvious injury in the impact, and his medical condition was not exacerbated by the collision.

How fires get their names

Every year in California thousands of wildfires start throughout the state. In most cases, the dispatch center sending the initial resources to a wildland fire will designate a name for the fire, but the first on scene engine or fire official can also name the incident. Fires are usually named for the area in which they start – a geographical location, local landmark, street, lake, mountain, peak, etc. Quickly naming the fire provides responding fire resources with an additional locater, and allows fire officials to track and prioritize incidents by name. For example during the Southern California Fire Siege of 2003, the largest wildland fire in California history, the Cedar Fire in San Diego County, was named after the Cedar Creek Falls area where it started. The destructive Old Fire, which burned during the same time period in San Bernardino County, was named after the road along which it started - Old Waterman Canyon Road.
