Mourning Begins For Contra Costa Firefighters

The first line of duty deaths in the Contra Costa Fire Protection Districts history leaves firefighters mourning.

Capt. Matt Burton, 34, of Concord and Fire Engineer Scott Desmond, 37, of Brentwood.

The men were killed when the were caught in a flashover during a heroic rescue attempt.

The residents Delbert Moore, 67, and his wife, Gayle, 62 also died in the inferno.

The county firefighter fatalities come less than a month after the neighboring Richmond Fire Department lost Ron Wiley, a deputy fire marshal, in a July 2, on-duty traffic crash.
