Fire Fighter I is a seasonal, temporary classification used by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE). Fire Fighter I hiring usually occurs each April, May, or June, depending upon the upcoming fire season conditions.
The minimum qualification to participate in the Fire Fighter I examination is that you must be 18 years of age at the time of appointment to a Firefighter I position.
You must file a Fire Fighter I application (1.1MB PDF) at each CAL FIRE Unit in which you wish to be considered for appointment. For a listing of CAL FIRE Units, please refer to the "CAL FIRE Unit Contacts".
The filing period for the 2009 fire season (54K PDF) is the first business day of November 2008 through the last business day of January 2009.
Applications will not be accepted at Sacramento Headquarters, Region Offices, or Conservation Camps.

Minimum requirements may not include all possible requirement options or may not reflect current revisions. Most classifications require possession of a valid driver's license of the appropriate class issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles.
