Ventura County: Oxnard Multiple Mobile Homes Destroyed In Friday Fire Reports Of Child Playing With Fire #CaFire

OXNARD, Calif. (KABC) -- Several homes were destroyed in a fire at a mobile home park in Oxnard Friday afternoon.

The fire started just before 4 p.m. on the 1200 block of Oxnard Boulevard. Firefighters were able to put out the flames and residents escaped safely.

Oxnard fire crews say they were dealing with 30 mph winds. It quickly became a three-alarm fire, burning six mobile homes and another structure.

Cindy Aguilera, the park's owner, says a boy who lives there told her husband somebody was playing with fire in the field next to the mobile home park.
"By the time my husband got the extinguisher and ran out there, he says there was nothing he could do. The flames were just so high," said Aguilera.

The Red Cross has set up a temporary shelter at Oxnard College. Ale Lopez and her son Jerry arrived home to find firefighters battling the blaze.

"They didn't let us go in, but from what we could see, our house was gone," said Lopez.

Despite losing everything, the Lopez family feels fortunate they weren't home when the fire started.

"If I didn't have detention, I could've died," said Jerry Lopez, who explained that he and his mother would've been at home at the time.

Crews planned to stay overnight to make sure there are no hotspots that could flare up due to the strong winds. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend News: Bells Ring From Coast to Coast for 3rd Annual Bells Across America for Fallen Firefighters

Bells Will Ring From Coast to Coast for 3rd Annual Bells Across America for Fallen Firefighters
National remembrance honors those who died in the line of duty
Bells Across America for Fallen Firefighters
For the third year, the entire country is invited to come together as one community to honor the memory of those firefighters who died in the line of duty and reassure their loved ones that their firefighter will not be forgotten by participating in the Bells Across America for Fallen Firefighters.
Fire departments, places of worship, community organizations and individuals from coast to coast will join the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation in this poignant tribute as part of the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend in Emmitsburg, Maryland.
"The ringing of bells has a powerful meaning to firefighters. Not only do bells signal the beginning or end of a call, they also were used to notify department members that one of their own had died while serving the community," explained Chief Ronald Siarnicki, executive director of the NFFF. "At the beginning of the Memorial Service on Sunday, October 6, the bells at the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Chapel in Emmitsburg will ring to honor the memories of those who made the ultimate sacrifice in 2012. We are encouraging firefighters across the country to invite their places of worship and community organizations to join us with their own tribute to all our fallen heroes."
The moment of remembrance can occur at any time during October 5 or 6. Fire department representatives are encouraged to work with local clergy and community leaders to develop an appropriate tribute. Some suggestions include: ringing chapel bells, a moment of silence, a brief prayer, a hymn, or tolling a ceremonial bell by members of the fire department.
Hundreds of fire departments, places of worship and other groups participated in Bells Across America for Fallen Firefighters over the past two years. For more information about participating and to download sample invitation letters, press release and response form, please visit www.BellsAcrossAmerica.com.

LACFD Red Flag Warning Augmented Staffing Plan. #CaFire #CaWX

County of Los Angeles

Fire Department

 NEWS RELEASE

RED FLAG WIND CONDITION STAFFING

The Los Angeles County Fire Department has released an augmented staffing plan in response to the National Weather Service red flag wind warning.  The red flag warning will be in effect for the Los Angeles County and Ventura mountains starting October 3 at 9:00 p.m. through October 6, 2013, at 8:00 a.m.   The Fire Department’s staffing plan begins at 2000 hours on Thursday, October 3, 2013, and end on Sunday, October 6, 2013, at 0800 hours.

Gusty northeast winds and low relative humidity can be expected for most of Los Angeles County as of today until Sunday morning.  Extreme wind gusts are expected in the mountain areas as well as the coastal and valley areas, which will result in a high fire danger throughout Los Angeles County.  In response to the increased fire danger, Los Angeles County Fire Chief Daryl L. Osby has ordered additional staffing and pre-deployment of resources throughout Los AngelesCounty. In addition, Fire Chief reminds citizens in brush areas to take appropriate precautions.  These precautions include, but are not limited to:

Ø      Report any sign of smoke immediately to your local fire department by dialing 911
(If you dial 911 from your cellular phone, know your location).

Ø      Use extreme caution when operating spark or flame producing machinery in hazardous grass or brush areas.

Ø      If you live in a brush area, you should have a Wildfire Action Plan in place.  Be familiar with the Ready! Set! Go! Program that provides important pre-planning and evacuation information to residents.  For more information, please log on to www.fire.lacounty.gov.

Ø      Report any suspicious persons or vehicles to law enforcement.

****REMINDER**** Every fire has the ability to be catastrophic. The wildland fire management environment has profoundly changed. Growing numbers of communities, across the nation, are experiencing longer fire seasons; more frequent, bigger, and more severe, fires are a real threat. Be careful with all campfires and equipment.

"I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts, and beer." --Abraham Lincoln
