2,000 California Air National Guard Firefighting MAFFS Aircraft Techs Furloughed

Some 2,000 California National Guard technicians who maintain critically needed firefighting aircraft have been  furloughed during the federal government's partial shutdown - cuts that the  Guard's leader called "inane."
MAFFS Firefighting Equipment Technician At Work
In a letter to National Guard families that he posted on Facebook, Baldwin said his agency was in a dispute with Pentagon "bureaucrats" about which military jobs were critical to public safety. The cuts, he said, would have an "adverse impact on our ability to respond to state emergencies."
Baldwin said "lives are at stake" because of the "inane cuts and work stoppages" ordered by the Pentagon.
Guard spokesman Lt. Col. Thomas Keegan said in an interview Wednesday that 2,000 federally paid service technicians who work at 90 armories and eight air bases had been furloughed as a result of the partial shutdown. Those technicians maintain National Guard cargo planes and helicopters that respond statewide to major wildfires, he said.
"It's going to be much more difficult for the Guard to respond during an emergency," Keegan said.
He said Guard technicians had recently returned from helping to maintain 14 aircraft used to fight the Rim Fire, which burned 400 square miles in and around Yosemite National Park a month ago.
In his letter, Baldwin encouraged Guard members and their families to lobby members of Congress to pay for the technicians and the 20,000 Guard troops who are supposed to undergo two days of training each month.
"He's upset," Keegan said. "He thinks the Guard is getting a raw deal."
House Republicans, who have held up passage of a full government funding bill to try to cripple President Obama's health-insurance law, have proposed legislation that would restore money for the Guard in California and other states.
Democrats have resisted such piecemeal funding approaches, insisting that Congress deal with all government operations at the same time and preserve the health law.

Red Flag Conditions LAFD Pre Deploying Additional Resources for Santa Ana Winds Wildfire Danger

As a result of the anticipated increased winds and lowering relative humidity, the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) will pre-deploy additional resources at 8:00 PM on October 3rd, 2013.

Please note a Red Flag Condition has been issued for Los Angeles City.

Red Flag Restricted Parking will be in effect from Thursday, October 3, 2013 08:00 PM to Friday, October 4, 2013 08:00 AM or until further notice.

When fire weather conditions dictate, the City of Los Angeles may enact special parking restrictions in areas historically prone to wildfire. These are critical areas (very narrow roads, hairpin turns, and key intersections) where parked vehicles could delay citizens trying to evacuate and delay fire companies attempting to gain access during a fast moving Brush Fire.

This local declaration of parking restrictions is separate from regional forecasts from our friends at the National Weather Service.

To determine current Red Flag Alert Parking Restrictions in the City of Los Angeles, please call 3-1-1 or visit: lafd.org/redflag

'Red Flag' No Parking Sign. Click to learn more...

Additional staffing includes:  21 Engines, 15 Brush Patrols (4x4 trucks able to access remote areas, equipped with water and hose), one Bulldozer Team, two Water Tenders (apparatus containing large amount of water), one EIT (Firefighter Staff Assistant) for each Battalion and Division Chief, two Metro Fire Dispatchers, one Air Operations Officer and two Helitac (helicopter) members, along with Community (CERT) Fire Patrols.

These additional firefighters will be placed at select Neighborhood Fire Stations serving high hazard brush areas. These Fire Stations include: 8, 19, 23, 28, 35, 41, 44, 47, 74, 83, 84, 78, 94, 98, and 109. The specific stations/locations are based on fire experience, area access and fire potential.

LACFD FIRE STATION 71 IN THE CITY OF MALIBU TO BE REBUILT; FIREFIGHTERS TEMPORARILY RELOCATED #CaFire

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE                                                                              Contact:  LACoFD Public Affairs

FIRE STATION 71 IN THE CITY OF MALIBU TO BE REBUILT; FIREFIGHTERS TEMPORARILY RELOCATED

The Los Angeles County Fire Department is proud to announce that Fire Station 71 in the City of Malibu is being rebuilt. Originally built in 1939, this fire station is one of the County’s oldest, and is no longer able to keep up with newer, larger equipment resources or emerging technologies.

The first responders of Fire Station 71 will operate from a temporary fire station located at 30050 W. Pacific Coast Highway, adjacent to Zuma Beach Lifeguard Headquarters. The temporary facility housing Fire Station 71 is located just 1.8 miles west of the station’s former site. This location is centrally located to address the needs of the entire jurisdiction. Firefighters and equipment were transferred to this temporary site on September 26.

Abatement work on the former Fire Station 71, located at 28722 W. Pacific Coast Highway, begins the week of October 6, 2013, and demolition of the existing structure is scheduled for the week of October 14, 2013. Construction of the new Fire Station 71 will take 10 to 12 months to complete.

Once finished, this new, 5,800-square-foot state-of-the-art facility will feature individual dormitories, two full bathrooms, a day room, office space, and a bay large enough to accommodate two fire engines and a paramedic squad. The new station will also include an upgraded septic system designed to meet modern day standards.

Through the Los Angeles County Arts Commission’s Civic Art Program, the work of a local artist will be featured at the new fire station. Matt Doolin, a collaborator at Topanga Art Tile, was chosen from a field of over 50 applicants. His artwork will be a tile mosaic for the building’s façade.

If there are any questions or concerns, please contact LACoFD Public Information Office at (323) 881-2411.

****REMINDER**** Every fire has the ability to be catastrophic. The wildland fire management environment has profoundly changed. Growing numbers of communities, across the nation, are experiencing longer fire seasons; more frequent, bigger, and more severe, fires are a real threat. Be careful with all campfires and equipment.

"I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts, and beer." --Abraham Lincoln
