Fire activity increased in a few of the western states including Washington, Idaho, Utah, Colorado, and Wyoming. California remains the most active with 11 large fires and complexes burning a total of 422,010 acres.

A total of 39 large fires burning 496,773 acres was reported nation-wide. Ten new large fires were reported: two each in Texas, Idaho, Utah, and Washington; and one each in Colorado and Wyuoming. Four large fires were contained: one each in Florida, Montana, Washington, and Nevada.

On July 25, on the Eagle Fire, a portion of the Iron Complex near Junction City, California, Olympic National Park firefighter, Andrew Palmer was fatally injured. On July 26, a firefighter was fatally injured on the Panther Fire near Happy Camp, California. The firefighting community extends condolences to the families and friends of these fallen firefighters.

Australia and New Zealand are providing 44 fire specialists and managers to assist with fire suppression operations in California.

Two MAFFS C-130 airtankers from the 145th Airlift Wing, Charlotte, North Carolina are supporting the State of California at McClellan Airpark in Sacramento, California. The Mission Commander is LTC Charles Davis, 145th Airlift Wing, Charlotte, North Carolina.

Weather Discussion: Windy conditions will continue across Montana, Wyoming, and the Northern Plains. Thunderstorms may occur over parts of Montana, Colorado, Utah, and eastern Oregon. Texas and Oklahoma will be hot and dry.

Conditions:

No anticipated growth unless a significant event occurs. Active fire behavior has been isolated to the north and east flanks of the fire. Other areas are experiencing short runs in the interior fire area due to lower humidity and higher temperatures. Good progress was made yesterday establishing and improving fireline around the north end. Today, firefighters will continue to work aggressively on getting fire lines completed in the north. Fire suppression repair needs are being identified and begun in several areas.

Road restrictions on Highway 140 East of Mariposa may affect access to Yosemite National Park. Visitors to Yosemite National Park are encouraged to explore other access routes. Various other road restrictions remain in place in and around the fire area. Sherlock Road remains closed to residents. For the latest highway conditions visit Caltrans.

- GREATER LAKE TAHOE AREA - Red flag warning in effect from 11 am this morning to 8 pm pdt this evening for gusty winds and low humidity for the east shores of lake Tahoe and the Carson range.

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN RENO HAS ISSUED A RED FLAG WARNING...WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM 11 AM THIS MORNING TO 8 PM PDT THIS EVENING.
SOUTHWEST WINDS WILL INCREASE ACROSS THE TAHOE BASIN THIS MORNING. THE STRONGEST WINDS WILL OCCUR THIS AFTERNOON ALONG THE EAST SHORES OF LAKE TAHOE AND THE CARSON RANGE.
SPEEDS OF 15 TO 20 MPH ARE EXPECTED BY EARLY AFTERNOON WITH GUSTS TO 35 MPH...HIGHER GUSTS TO 60 MPH OVER THE RIDGES OF THE CARSON RANGE. IN ADDITION...RELATIVE HUMIDITY WILL DROP TO NEAR 10% AFTER POOR RECOVERY LAST NIGHT. The Telegraph Fire continues to be active on the north and east flanks near Jenkins Hill and Soapstone Ridge. Other areas are experiencing flare-ups due to lower humidity and higher temperatures. Yesterday, good progress was made getting fireline around the active portions of the fire. Today, firefighters will continue to aggressively work on getting fire lines completed in the north. Efforts will continue in all other areas of the fires to patrol and look for any hotspots that might re-ignite.

Highway 140 east of Mariposa is subject to various restrictions based on fire activity. Travel of Highway 140 may be subject to CHP vehicle escorts. There are various other restrictions to roads in and around the fire area. Visitors to Yosemite National Park may want to use alternate routes. For the latest highway conditions visit Caltrans.

Statewide Fire Overview - Lightning Series

Current Situation: On June 20, 2008, a thunderstorm system moved over California striking over two thousand lightning sparked fires. Today over 98 percent of those fires have been contained. California’s firefighters have received assistance from firefighting agencies across the state, nation and several foreign countries. Conditions throughout California remain extremely dry and fire danger remains very high.

Highway closures: Firefighters remind everyone to use extreme caution while driving on roads affected by fires. All major roads are now open. There may be some delays on State Highways 70, 140 and 299. Travelers are advised to seek current information on secondary road closures from local law enforcement.

Evacuations: Areas of Mariposa, Plumas and Trinity counties are under evacuation orders and voluntary evacuations at this time. Residents are advised to monitor their local fire situation, check with local law enforcement agencies for information, and be prepared to evacuate when necessary.
