Firefighters trapped in basement
Minutes after crews responded to the fire, a mayday call was made around 6:34 a.m. for two firefighters who fell into the basement.
Sacramento Fire Chief Walter White said the basement was on fire when the two became trapped.
"Today I was very pleased that our crews responded as well as they did," White said. "I think we got the best possible outcome once the mayday was called."
One of the firefighters was able to make it out unassisted, but the second firefighter was rescued from the home, fire crews said.
A witness told KCRA 3 he saw one of the firefighters being dragged from the home.
White said he spoke with the injured firefighters and found them in good spirits, but that some treatment is ahead.
A neighbor told KCRA 3 flames were shooting from the small windows near the base of the home as firefighters battled the blaze.
Smoke was still billowing from the two-story home around 7 a.m. as crews continued to battle the three-alarm fire nearly an hour after it was reported.
