Sacramento Metro Fire Department Firefighters Injured In Hit and Run During EMS Call

Media Release: Firefighters Injured

At approximately 12:30AM this morning (May 16, 2014), Sacramento Metro Fire Department responded to a medical aid call in the Watt Avenue / Elverta Road area for a report of a subject passed out inside of a vehicle whose engine was still running. As Fire personnel attempted to assess the drivers medical need, he suddenly positioned the vehicle in reverse and accelerated, taking two firemen with him approximately 200 feet until the vehicle crashed into a tree, freeing the firemen from the vehicle. The driver then sped forward onto the public streets, crashing into a parked vehicle as he fled.

Shortly thereafter, the vehicle was found parked and unoccupied in a residential driveway located in the 7000 block of Ort Way. The suspect was found hiding in a backyard by a Sheriff’s K9.

The two Sacramento Metro Firemen were treated for their injuries; one at the scene and one being transported to a local hospital where he has reportedly sustained non-life threatening injuries. Leontiy Kapakly, 23, has been arrested and charged with three felony crimes related to this incident; including assault with a deadly weapon and driving under the influence causing great bodily injury.

****REMINDER**** Every fire has the ability to be catastrophic. The wildland fire management environment has profoundly changed. Growing numbers of communities, across the nation, are experiencing longer fire seasons; more frequent, bigger, and more severe, fires are a real threat. Be careful with all campfires and equipment.

"I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts, and beer." --Abraham Lincoln
