NATIONAL WILDFIRE COMMUNITY PREPAREDNESS DAY

Join communities throughout the U.S. on Saturday, May 3, 2014 as NFPA launches its first National Wildfire Community Preparedness Day!

Commit a couple of hours, or the entire day, and watch as your actions positively contribute to reducing your community’s wildfire risk. Challenge your friends, your family, relatives, faith-based group or youth organization to develop a project and join others throughout the nation in making big changes. Your efforts will help raise wildfire awareness, promote collaboration and bring neighbors together to work on projects that can help protect homes, neighborhoods and entire communities from future wildfire risk or current post-fire impacts.

NFPA is pleased to announce State Farm®, the largest home insurer in the United States, has provided funding to assist with our Preparedness Day outreach and promotional efforts, in addition to providing monetary awards of $500 to 20 individual projects that will be undertaken during the May 3 event. State Farm has a long history of proactive wildfire safety education to its policyholders in high-risk regions and NFPA is proud to partner with State Farm on this national wildfire safety event!

Enter the contest

Want to get involved? Have a project idea? Here’s how to enter the NFPA/State Farm neighborhood project contest:

There are two ways to visit the NFPA/State Farm Wildfire Preparedness Day Neighborhood Project Award Promotion contest app powered by SnapApp:
- Enter through the website
- Enter through the contest tab on NFPA’s Firewise Facebook page
From either location, you may post your neighborhood’s planned activity (or activities). Include your name and potential participants, your contact information, city and state, and how you will use the project funding on Wildfire Community Preparedness Day. The deadline to post your project idea is March, 19, 2014.
Encourage your friends, family, colleagues and neighbors to vote for your project idea through the contest app on the website or NFPA’s Firewise Facebook page. Vote for your favorite project between now and March 19, 2014.
Votes will be considered in NFPA’s final determination of the winning project ideas. The top 20 project ideas will receive $500 each to be used to fund their May 3, 2014 project.

How fires get their names

Every year in California thousands of wildfires start throughout the state. In most cases, the dispatch center sending the initial resources to a wildland fire will designate a name for the fire, but the first on scene engine or fire official can also name the incident. Fires are usually named for the area in which they start – a geographical location, local landmark, street, lake, mountain, peak, etc. Quickly naming the fire provides responding fire resources with an additional locater, and allows fire officials to track and prioritize incidents by name. For example during the Southern California Fire Siege of 2003, the largest wildland fire in California history, the Cedar Fire in San Diego County, was named after the Cedar Creek Falls area where it started. The destructive Old Fire, which burned during the same time period in San Bernardino County, was named after the road along which it started - Old Waterman Canyon Road.

CAL FIRE is the largest fire department in California and the second largest fire department in the United States. CDF - CAL FIRE Firefighters answer the call more than 300,000 times a year. CAL FIRE Firefighters make up the fire department for 30 of our 58 counties in California and more than 100 local communities. We serve as the incident command during many of California’s most serious disasters. CAL FIRE Firefighters respond to many various types and forms of calls ranging from structural fires, to auto accidents, to earthquakes, to floods, to the spilling of hazardous materials, to every conceivable disaster; CAL FIRE answer's the calls. CAL FIRE is the largest fire department in California and the second largest fire department in the United States . CAL FIRE firefighters protect 33 million acres of State Responsibility Area (SRA). We have over 4,000 members within CAL FIRE and CAL FIRE is associated with the California Professional Firefighters (CPF) and the International Association of Firefighters (IAFF).
