March. 18 (UPI) -- A 3-year-old who fell out of a third-story in window in Burbank, Calif., was saved by the quick thinking of some of his neighbors -- and their mattress.
Konrad and Jennifer Lightner saw the toddler throwing toys out the window while they were moving a mattress from one home to another on Sunday afternoon. When the baby tried to go after some of his playthings, they ran over and dropped the mattress under the window to potentially break his fall.
The child then fell out of the window but became tangled up in some power lines. After working himself loose, the toddler fell again, but Konrad was able to catch him and lower him down to the mattress.
Emergency workers who responded to the scene took the baby to a nearby hospital where he was treated for minor injuries.
Firefighter Eric Rowley, the “Burbank Firefighter of the Year,” presented Konrad with a fire department challenge coin to congratulate him for his heroics.
