At 8:29 a.m., firefighters were called to the fire near Elm Street and Bonita Avenue, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.
The fire could be seen from Interstate 10.
“I noticed smoke ahead and also noticed how high in the air the smoke was,” said Palm Desert resident Ron Valens, 52, who spotted the fire as he was driving along the freeway.
“It looked like flames were engulfing pretty much the whole back side of the head of the windmill,” Valens said.
He added the while the flames were a “very odd sight” they were “kind of a cool sight.”
One engine responded and firefighters contained the fire within 10 minutes, Cal Fire spokeswoman Melody Hendrickson said.
There were no injuries and the cause is under investigation.
