MILPITAS (CBS SF) - The Milpitas and San Jose fire departments responded to a two-alarm fire at Santa Clara County’s Elmwood Correctional Facility late Wednesday morning, a fire battalion chief said.
Firefighters were dispatched to the jail, located at 701 S. Abel St. in Milpitas, at 11:46 a.m., Milpitas Battalion Chief Rick Frawley said.
The fire burned in the jail’s support services building, which houses a kitchen, laundry facility and warehouse, Santa Clara County sheriff’s spokesman Deputy Kurtis Stenderup said.
All visitation programs at the facility were canceled Wednesday, and as of 2 p.m., the jail remained on lockdown, Stenderup said.
The fire does not appear to be suspicious, he said.
The blaze was contained by noon and fire officials cleared the scene shortly after 2 p.m., Frawley said.
It started in the building’s HVAC mechanical roof system on the third floor, and the first and second floors sustained water damage, Frawley said.
“The structure still appears to be in good shape,” Stenderup said.
The jail is a men’s and women’s facility, according to the Santa Clara County Department of Corrections’ website.
The fire is being investigated by the Milpitas Fire Department in cooperation with the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office, Frawley said.
