The Forest Service has identified a smoke jumper killed Monday while fighting the Saddle Back Fire fire in the south Warner Wilderness Area.

Sheehy's team, California Smokejumpers, was based out of Redding. They were fighting the Saddle Back Fire, one of several dozen lightning caused fires that began on several national forests throughout northern California Sunday and Monday. The team was dispatched around 3 pm Monday and he was killed about 5 pm.

28-year old Luke Sheehy of Susanville died when debris fell out of a tree and struck him. The fire was a mile and a half southeast of Soup Springs Campground in the Modoc National Forest.

The Forest Service is launching a full review into the exact cause of his death to learn everything possible to prevent future incidents.

Our condolences go out to his family as well as the California Smokejumpers.

****REMINDER**** Every fire has the ability to be catastrophic. The wildland fire management environment has profoundly changed. Growing numbers of communities, across the nation, are experiencing longer fire seasons; more frequent, bigger, and more severe, fires are a real threat. Be careful with all campfires and equipment.

"I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts, and beer." --Abraham Lincoln
