LAFD Stomps Four Acre Sunland Brush Fire
At 3:40 p.m. on Saturday June 8th, 2013, the Los Angeles Fire Department was summoned to the 9400 block of Foothill Boulevard where they found two acres of medium brush burning uphill. A strong attack from the ground and air ensued and additional resources were requested, including mutual aid from our friends at Los Angeles County Fire Department (LACoFD) and Angeles National Forest (ANF).

Fortunately there was minimal to no wind and the fire was driven by topography. The swift arrival of precise water-dropping aircraft, along with firefighters who labored on the ground by extending hose lays up steep terrain, stopped the flames from burning out of control.

Over 100 LAFD firefighters along with LACoFD and ANF, all under the command of Assistant Chief Andrew Fox, battled through steep hills in 77 degree heat and 55% humidity, and fully contained the flames to 4.025 acres by 5:53 p.m. Firefighters performed an extensive overhaul and scratch line around the fire, then remained on scene into the night to ensure there were no flare-ups. The cause of the fire is under active investigation.

****REMINDER**** Every fire has the ability to be catastrophic. The wildland fire management environment has profoundly changed. Growing numbers of communities, across the nation, are experiencing longer fire seasons; more frequent, bigger, and more severe, fires are a real threat. Be careful with all campfires and equipment.

"I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts, and beer." --Abraham Lincoln
