CALIFORNIA RECEIVES FEMA FUNDING TO HELP FIGHT “POWER HOUSE” FIRE IN LOS ANGELES COUNTY

OAKLAND, Calif. — The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) this weekend authorized the use of federal funds to help the state of California combat the Power House Fire in Los Angeles County.

The state of California submitted a request for a fire management assistance declaration on June 1st for the Power House Fire burning in Los Angeles County. At the time of the request, the fire was threatening 1,200 homes in and around the communities of Green Valley, Lake Elizabeth, and Lake Hughes.

More than 1,100 of the threatened homes are primary residences. The fire was also threatening the Los Angeles Fire House 78, several elementary schools, telecommunication infrastructure, a transmission station and transmission lines in the area. Mandatory evacuations were issued for approximately 1,800 people. The fire started on May 30, 2013, and had burned in excess of 5,500 acres of state and private land.

The authorization makes FEMA funding available to reimburse 75 percent of the eligible firefighting costs under an approved grant for managing, mitigating and controlling the fire.

The President’s Disaster Relief Fund provides funding for federal fire management grants made available by FEMA to assist in fighting fires that threaten to cause a major disaster. Eligible costs covered by the grant may include expenses for field camps; equipment use, repair and replacement; tools, materials and supplies as well as mobilization and demobilization activities.

FEMA’s mission is to support our citizens and first responders to ensure that as a nation we work together to build, sustain, and improve our capability to prepare for, protect against, respond to, recover from, and mitigate all hazards.

****REMINDER**** Every fire has the ability to be catastrophic. The wildland fire management environment has profoundly changed. Growing numbers of communities, across the nation, are experiencing longer fire seasons; more frequent, bigger, and more severe, fires are a real threat. Be careful with all campfires and equipment.

"I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts, and beer." --Abraham Lincoln
