1 Dead After Fire Engine Collides with Vehicle in Poway #CaFire

One person is dead after a crash involving a fire dept. engine and another vehicle in Poway

What: Fire Engine (E3711). was responding to a medical call with lights and sirens on when the crash happened.

When: The crash was reported just before 4 a.m. at Poway and Midland roads.

Who: Fire engine was from the City of Poway Fire Department and none of the firefighters were injured.

A person in the other vehicle died at the scene.

Another person had to be rescued by crews and was taken to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Where: A Sig Alert is in effect for westbound Poway Road and Midland Road as a result of the collision. An investigation will likely be conducted throughout Thursday morning.
Note: Poway Fire Department Truck company (T3773) responded to assist with extrication and treatment.

It was not a (ladder) truck involved in the collision; it was an engine (E3711). The truck company (T3773) responded to assist with extrication and treatment.

How fires get their names

Every year in California thousands of wildfires start throughout the state. In most cases, the dispatch center sending the initial resources to a wildland fire will designate a name for the fire, but the first on scene engine or fire official can also name the incident. Fires are usually named for the area in which they start – a geographical location, local landmark, street, lake, mountain, peak, etc. Quickly naming the fire provides responding fire resources with an additional locater, and allows fire officials to track and prioritize incidents by name. For example during the Southern California Fire Siege of 2003, the largest wildland fire in California history, the Cedar Fire in San Diego County, was named after the Cedar Creek Falls area where it started. The destructive Old Fire, which burned during the same time period in San Bernardino County, was named after the road along which it started - Old Waterman Canyon Road.
