A Shenzhen man left with burns over 98 percent of his body following a dust explosion last October received a life saving skin graft after doctors were able to use skin from his penis to cover the burnt areas.
Yang Qinjie's body was so horrifically burned according to doctors that only two areas of his skin were left intact: his scalp, and his penis. Skin can cover a burned area ten times its size, so relatively small amounts of healthy skin can be life-saving. By transplanting skin from his privates onto the worst affected areas of his body, doctors were about to save Yang's life.
"This is a medical miracle," President Cai Zhiming of Shenzhen Number Two People Hospital told reporters. "The patient was burned over 98% of his body, but still survived. This is a rare case in medical history in China.
