Chile: Two Firefighters Ambushed Responding To Wildfires

Two firefighters injured in Chilean ambush

TEMUCO, Chile -- Firefighters responding to dozens of fires in southern Chile were attacked by masked assailants dressed in camouflage, authorities said.

The attackers fired at the first responders as they were getting out of a helicopter in the Araucania Region, Two of the firefighters were transported to local hospitals with injuries.

Forestal Mininco, the Chilean company that employs the firefighters, said some 100 fires were started simultaneously across the Libertad Capesina estate Sunday night.

Much of the land that is now owned and operated by Forestal Mininco is also claimed by the indigenous Mapuche people.

The Santiago Times reported.

****REMINDER**** Every fire has the ability to be catastrophic. The wildland fire management environment has profoundly changed. Growing numbers of communities, across the nation, are experiencing longer fire seasons; more frequent, bigger, and more severe, fires are a real threat. Be careful with all campfires and equipment.
