FEMA: NEW YORK HURRICANE #SANDY RECOVERY BULLET POINTS

SUPPORT TO NEW YORK FOR THE RESPONSE TO

NEW YORK CITY — Since Hurricane Sandy struck New York last week, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has approved more than $221 million to help individuals and families recover from the disaster.

FEMA provides the following snapshot of the disaster recovery effort as of Nov. 8:

More than 147,000 New Yorkers have contacted FEMA for information or registered for assistance with FEMA and more than $221 million has been approved. More than 73,000 have applied through the online application site at www.disasterassistance.gov.
18 Disaster Recovery Centers (DRC) are open in the nine declared counties. These include mobile sites as well as fixed sites, and to date more than 9,400 survivors have been assisted at DRCs in New York.
More than 1,200 Community Relations (CR) specialists are strategically positioned throughout affected communities, going door to door explaining the types of disaster assistance available and how to register. More teams continue to arrive daily.
1,062 inspectors in the field have completed more than 22,200 home inspections.
There are 27 shelters in operation housing 4,939 people.
The American Red Cross has distributed 599,776 meals, 471,620 snacks, 64,518 bulk items which include items like blankets, gloves and comfort kits.
2,491,200 liters of water, 1,363,968 Meals-Ready-to-Eat, and 133,650 blankets have been distributed.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will evaluate the Cupsogue/Moriches inlet to assess any further damages from yesterday’s Nor'easter storm and continue emergency power operations with focus on housing areas.
There are eleven Disaster Medical Assistance Teams (DMATs) from the Department of Health and Human Services deployed in New York.
The Defense Logistics Agency has purchased unleaded and diesel fuel that is being distributed in areas throughout New York impacted by the storm to supplement ongoing private sector efforts.
The U.S. Department of Labor announced that their National Emergency Grant funds will award nearly $30 million to the New York Department of Labor to assist with the restoration of public lands, infrastructure , and to assist with cleanup and recovery.
The Treasury Department and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) will waive low-income housing tax credit rules that prohibit owners of low-income housing from providing housing to survivors of Hurricane Sandy who do not qualify as low-income.
The Department of Defense’s U.S. Transportation Command delivered 61 power restoration vehicles, 65 technical personnel, 63 power restoration vehicles and 132 technical personnel to Stewart Air National Guard Base, N.Y.
New York’s major disaster declaration was amended so that the nine declared counties are now approved for all categories of Public Assistance, which includes reimbursement for eligible costs of emergency response services, debris removal and repairs to public infrastructure.

How fires get their names

Every year in California thousands of wildfires start throughout the state. In most cases, the dispatch center sending the initial resources to a wildland fire will designate a name for the fire, but the first on scene engine or fire official can also name the incident. Fires are usually named for the area in which they start – a geographical location, local landmark, street, lake, mountain, peak, etc. Quickly naming the fire provides responding fire resources with an additional locater, and allows fire officials to track and prioritize incidents by name. For example during the Southern California Fire Siege of 2003, the largest wildland fire in California history, the Cedar Fire in San Diego County, was named after the Cedar Creek Falls area where it started. The destructive Old Fire, which burned during the same time period in San Bernardino County, was named after the road along which it started - Old Waterman Canyon Road.
