Incident: Mill Fire Wildfire

Update:
7-10-04 0800: 13,00 acres, 20%, Mill Fire is burning in northwestern Colusa County on the Mendocino National Forest.
The fire showed significant growth yesterday, driven by hot, dry, conditions. Growth was predominately to the east and north. Fire behavior including active torching, crown runs, and spotting up to one half mile in advance of the main fire. Northern California Team 2 (NorCal2), a Type 2 Interagency Incident Management Team assumed command of the Mill Fire this morning.

Resources Committed: 9 Type 1 crews, 3 Type 2 crews, 8 helicopters, 17 engines, 4 dozers, 2 water tenders. Total personnel = 360
Predicted Weather: Unseasonably high temperatures (90-95) and low relative humidity (9-16 %) are forecast for the next several days and will continue to challenge firefighting efforts.

Evacuations and Closures:

Evacuations are in effect for the communities of Fouts Springs, Bonnie View, and Board Camp Springs and campgrounds within the Upper Letts Lake area.
Portions of the community of Stonyford are under voluntary evacuation,
The Fouts Spring Road (The M10 Road) is closed at Stonyford.
The Goat Mountain Road is closed at the Stonyford Lodoga Road.
An Advisory has been issued to residents west of the Stonyford Lodoga Road between Stonyford and Goat Mountain Road to be prepared for a possible evacuation.
An Area Closure is in effect for the Mendocino National Forest for all roads, trails, recreational facilities within the Grindstone Ranger District.

Public Meeting is planned at the Stonyford Town Hall today, July 9, at 7:00pm. Members of NorCal2 and the Mendocino National Forest will provide the most current fire information and updates at that time.

How fires get their names

Every year in California thousands of wildfires start throughout the state. In most cases, the dispatch center sending the initial resources to a wildland fire will designate a name for the fire, but the first on scene engine or fire official can also name the incident. Fires are usually named for the area in which they start – a geographical location, local landmark, street, lake, mountain, peak, etc. Quickly naming the fire provides responding fire resources with an additional locater, and allows fire officials to track and prioritize incidents by name. For example during the Southern California Fire Siege of 2003, the largest wildland fire in California history, the Cedar Fire in San Diego County, was named after the Cedar Creek Falls area where it started. The destructive Old Fire, which burned during the same time period in San Bernardino County, was named after the road along which it started - Old Waterman Canyon Road.
