Coffee Break: Smart Pig Poked In Pipe

With Smart-Pig Technology, PG&E Gains a Detailed Look Inside Its Pipelines

This week, Pacific Gas and Electricity showed off a smart pig. It’s a funny name for an important tool.

With this state-of-the-art inspection technology, PG&E can get precise information about its gas transmission pipelines.

Jesus Soto Jr., PG&E’s senior vice president of gas transmission operations, compared the smart pig to a medical MRI, and called it “the most advanced way” to determine the condition of pipelines.

At a news conference at PG&E’s Milpitas Gas Terminal, Soto was joined by representatives from PII Pipeline Solutions and the chief of the Milpitas Fire Department where two smart pigs were displayed and the technology was explained.

In this video, Soto talks about the significance of smart pigs as PG&E works to improve the safety of its gas operations. Click here to read a story about the event.

****REMINDER**** Every fire has the ability to be catastrophic. The wildland fire management environment has profoundly changed. Growing numbers of communities, across the nation, are experiencing longer fire seasons; more frequent, bigger, and more severe, fires are a real threat. Be careful with all campfires and equipment.

"I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts, and beer." --Abraham Lincoln
