The Alameda County Board of Supervisors has appointed Demetrious Shaffer to be Alameda County's interim fire chief.
Shaffer will succeed previous Fire Chief Sheldon Gilbert, who announced three weeks ago that he would resign on July 31"to pursue other career objectives and interests," but later moved up his resignation to Tuesday.
"While Chief Gilbert's departure was sooner than expected, we are fortunate to have an experienced fire chief serving as a deputy chief with the Alameda County Fire Department." - Board of Supervisors President Nate MileyBoard of Supervisors President Nate Miley said in a statement: "While Chief Gilbert's departure was sooner than expected, we are fortunate to have an experienced fire chief serving as a deputy chief with the Alameda County Fire Department."
Miley said Shaffer "is well prepared to step into the role as interim fire chief, based on his experience as the Newark Fire Chief and President of the California Fire Chiefs Association."
The Board of Supervisors said it will conduct a recruitment process to hire a permanent fire chief.
