SFFD: 30 residents displaced in multiple large residential structure fires

30 residents displaced in two San Francisco residential structure fires, total of 30 people were displaced by the two large fires in San Francisco on Saturday night, including one that spread to multiple structures in the Bayview District, fire officials said.

Bayview district fire was reported at 9:37 p.m. near the corner of Oakdale Avenue and Quint Street. The large structure fire spread to three residential and commercial buildings before firefighters were able to get it under control at 11:11 p.m.

21 adults and seven children were left displaced.

Only minutes after getting the Bayview fire under control, firefighters were dispatched to a second fire at a residence downtown near the intersection of California and Hyde streets, at 11:17 p.m.

Firefighters had that fire under control at 11:42 p.m. Two adults were displaced

No injuries were reported in either fire.

How fires get their names

Every year in California thousands of wildfires start throughout the state. In most cases, the dispatch center sending the initial resources to a wildland fire will designate a name for the fire, but the first on scene engine or fire official can also name the incident. Fires are usually named for the area in which they start – a geographical location, local landmark, street, lake, mountain, peak, etc. Quickly naming the fire provides responding fire resources with an additional locater, and allows fire officials to track and prioritize incidents by name. For example during the Southern California Fire Siege of 2003, the largest wildland fire in California history, the Cedar Fire in San Diego County, was named after the Cedar Creek Falls area where it started. The destructive Old Fire, which burned during the same time period in San Bernardino County, was named after the road along which it started - Old Waterman Canyon Road.
