BERKELEY, Calif. -- Firefighters are battling a two-alarm blaze at an apartment complex a few blocks from the University of California, Berkeley.
Television footage showed smoke still billowing from the building at 6 a.m. Thursday. Fire officials say the blaze began about two hours earlier.
At one point, the building was engulfed in bright orange flames.
Berkeley Fire Department Deputy Chief Gil Dong says the third story of the building collapsed partially, sending flames through the roof.
So fire crews backed down and fought the blaze from a defensive stance.
The occupants of the building and at least one adjacent structure were safely evacuated.
No one has been injured, and the fire has so far been contained to just the one apartment complex. The cause of the blaze has not been determined.
