Andrew was born on January 23, 1967 in San Fernando, California, and is a graduate of Antelope Valley High School.

Prior to becoming a police officer, Andrew was a skilled ceramic tile setter. He met his wife Tracy Deutscher in 1989 while installing tile at the house that they would eventually share and make their home.

In April of 1993, Andrew and Tracy (after four years of courtship) were married at Sea Coast Grace Church where they had been long standing members.

They continued to reside in Orange County, attend Sea Coast Grace Church and faithfully raise their family.

Andrew, inspired by Sgt. Shawn Shimono, a close friend for over twenty years, entered the Sheriff's Academy in October of 2003. Upon his graduation from the Sheriff's Academy on February 20, 2004, Andrew went on to became a Police Officer with the Hawthorne Police Department.

During Andrew's time with the Hawthorne Police Department, he was a long time member of the SWAT Team, an accomplished Motor Traffic Investigator and a Motor Officer. Andrew’s other accomplishments include his leadership as Vice President of the Hawthorne Police Officers Association and Treasurer of the Hawthorne Political Action Committee

Above and beyond the proud tradition and honor of Andrew’s profession, was Andrew the MAN.

Andrew was a devoted husband and father. With his wife Tracy, they were a faith filled loving couple, raising two young sons Garrett, and Grant.
Andrew loved his wife and children. Spending quality time with his family was paramount in his life as a husband and father.

He was active in both scouting and coaching youth baseball. To those who knew Andrew, he was both a friend and mentor. There was no end to what he would do for you.

Camping and motocross riding were great passions for Andrew. It was the time of his life being able to share those moments with his children.

Andrew is survived by his wife, of 18 years, Tracy, sons Garrett, 12 and Grant, 7 and a extended family, which includes his mother: Carole McConnell, father: Gary Garton, and brother: John McConnell

Andrew is preceded in death by his two daughters, Lindsay Faith and Baby Girl Garton, whom he now joins at peace in Heaven.

Checks will be accepted at the police department, make payable to HPOA c/o Officer Gartons Family.

Officer Andrew Garton was a seven year veteran of the Hawthorne Police Department died on May 26, 2011 from injuries sustained when his motorcycle crashed during the funeral procession of another fallen officer.

Officer Garton, 44, is the first police officer in the 89 year history of the Hawthorne Police Department to die in the line of duty. He was a true hero and will be greatly missed.
