USFS: El Dorado National Forest vehicle and equipment auction April 18

Annual Forest Service vehicle and equipment auction April 18

The annual U.S. Forest Service used vehicle and equipment auction is scheduled to be held on April 11. More than 100 vehicles will be sold to the highest bidder by way of an online auction through the GSA Website, gsaauctions.gov. The sale number is 91QSCI-11-221.

Sixty vehicles are located at the Eldorado National Forest facility, 2350 Carson Road, Camino. Fourteen vehicles are located at the Tahoe National Forest facility, 12019 Charles Drive, Grass Valley. And 30 vehicles are located at an Inyo National Forest facility, 798 N. Main St., Bishop.

Potential bidders can inspect the vehicles on Monday, April 11 through Friday, April 15 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. For additional information regarding vehicles located on the Eldorado and Tahoe National Forests contact Mike Heckendorn at 530-621-5289. For vehicles on the Inyo National Forest contact Dan Dummer at 760-873-2429.

How fires get their names

Every year in California thousands of wildfires start throughout the state. In most cases, the dispatch center sending the initial resources to a wildland fire will designate a name for the fire, but the first on scene engine or fire official can also name the incident. Fires are usually named for the area in which they start – a geographical location, local landmark, street, lake, mountain, peak, etc. Quickly naming the fire provides responding fire resources with an additional locater, and allows fire officials to track and prioritize incidents by name. For example during the Southern California Fire Siege of 2003, the largest wildland fire in California history, the Cedar Fire in San Diego County, was named after the Cedar Creek Falls area where it started. The destructive Old Fire, which burned during the same time period in San Bernardino County, was named after the road along which it started - Old Waterman Canyon Road.
