Bomb technicians sifting ashes of 'bomb factory' house in Escondido area

The bomb/arson unit of the San Diego County Sheriff's Department is sifting the ashes of the "bomb factory" house outside Escondido to ensure that all explosive materials were destroyed in Thursday's controlled burn.

The house, where massive quantities of bomb material were discovered, was reduced to ashes by a fast, hot fire set by remote-control detonation and monitored by dozens of fire, health, air pollution, and explosives specialists.

Once the bomb technicians declare the property on Via Scott to be free of explosives, the county's hazardous materials unit will supervise the clearing of the site of household toxic materials. That process is expected to continue through the weekend.

On Monday, the state Department of Toxic Substances Control and the county Department of Environmental Health will supervise the removal of ash and debris, a process expected to take all week.
Meanwhile, George Jakubec, 54, the former tenant of the property, remains in federal prison, charged with possessing bomb materials and bank robbery

How fires get their names

Every year in California thousands of wildfires start throughout the state. In most cases, the dispatch center sending the initial resources to a wildland fire will designate a name for the fire, but the first on scene engine or fire official can also name the incident. Fires are usually named for the area in which they start – a geographical location, local landmark, street, lake, mountain, peak, etc. Quickly naming the fire provides responding fire resources with an additional locater, and allows fire officials to track and prioritize incidents by name. For example during the Southern California Fire Siege of 2003, the largest wildland fire in California history, the Cedar Fire in San Diego County, was named after the Cedar Creek Falls area where it started. The destructive Old Fire, which burned during the same time period in San Bernardino County, was named after the road along which it started - Old Waterman Canyon Road.
