An Indiana firefighter was killed Friday night after he was pinned against a wall by a fire truck.
Leonard Murray, 53, a firefighter with Jackson Township, was killed instantly when a pick-up truck-sized fire vehicle lunged forward, according to This is Brown County.com.
Murray and another person were standing in front of the fire truck as work was being done on its steering mechanism, the online magazine staff reported.
In order to turn the steering wheel so that work could continue on the mechanism, a person inside the vehicle turned the key in the ignition, expecting it to go from the locked position to the first position and release the steering, Brown County Coroner Earl Piper said.
Instead, the key and ignition were already in the first position and turning it caused the engine to turn and the truck to lunge forward, trapping Murray and the other person between it and the wall, according to the published report.
The driver backed away and jumped out of the truck to go assist the two men. But when he did, the truck lunged forward again, trapping only Murray, and killing him instantly.
Blunt force trauma was listed as the cause of death.

****REMINDER**** Every fire has the ability to be catastrophic. The wildland fire management environment has profoundly changed. Growing numbers of communities, across the nation, are experiencing longer fire seasons; more frequent, bigger, and more severe, fires are a real threat. Be careful with all campfires and equipment.
