Mill Valley's acting fire chief, Greg Moore, was named permanent chief Friday by City Manager Jim McCann. Moore, 61, had served as acting chief since November 2009, when the city split the leadership of its fire and police departments after the retirement of joint department chief Robert Ritter. His annual salary is $140,148.
"Fire Chief Moore is a highly respected professional who has worked in the community for 36 years with his positive, upbeat approach," McCann said in a statement.
Moore has spent his entire career with the Mill Valley Fire Department, joining as a volunteer in 1974. He was hired full-time a year later, and was promoted through the ranks, most recently to battalion chief.
"Our fire department has a great relationship with the residents of Mill Valley, and I plan to continue to develop and support programs to ensure the safety of our community," Moore said in a statement.
Moore was a leader in developing the city's Steps, Lanes and Paths program and its vegetation management program for emergency vehicle access and fire prevention. He also supervised remodels of the city's two fire stations.
A Tamalpais High School graduate, Moore has a fire science degree from the College of Marin and a certificate from the California Fire Service Training and Education System.
More lives in Novato with his wife. The couple have two grown children.
